Let The Games Begin...

Life is getting back to normal this week with everybody well on the mend to being over colds, stomach viruses, cutting teeth, etc. It was a long two weeks for all of us.

This is one of my favorite times of the year as the Winter Olympics have begun in Vancouver,Canada. I am especially enjoying all the skiing events including the x-country competition. The speed skating is a grueling sport to watch as oftentimes participants spin out into the wall much like race cars do. I haven't seen the luge competition yet, but expect I'll see it soon. This afternoon, I watched the mogels, x-country skiing, and snowboarding events. My favorite part of the Olympics is the figure skating. Last night I watched the China team take the gold and several excellent skaters actually fell, surprisingly. I have always enjoyed the winter Olympics much better than the summer ones - even though I actually hate outdoor sports as a participant. I'm hoping the U.S. does well this year, but Canada is a winter country and they have very good athletic performers-especially in hockey and skating of any kind. I always feel spring is on the way when the Winter Olympics finish up....don't know why,as March is the worse month of the winter here in Colorado. Even without the Olympics, this is the time of year when NASCAR starts, basketball is winding down, figure skating competition events are on TV....and then baseball season starts. For me-that is heaven!

I am with you mom, I love watching the games. It was fun watching the short track speed skaters as they train here in Marquette. Some of the ski jumpers also train in Negaunee and several Luge people also do the naturban (sp?) luge events in Negaunee. Pretty neat eh?
Here comes the snow here tonight.

Glad to hear that everyone is feeling better. We all had the miserable cold, but we are feeling better now too. I think the figure skating is my favorite sport in the Olympics too, although it doesn't seem to be as good as it used to be back in the Michelle Kwan and Kristie Yamaguchi days. Seemed to be more professional and less falling back then. Oh - a correction about last night's competition. The Chinese team didn't take the gold. That was just the short program. They are doing the long program tonight, which together with the scores of last night, will determine who are the winners. Looks like that Chinese team has a good chance, but we will have to wait to see as it's still on as I'm typing this.

I didn't know some of the Olympic athletes trained in the U.P.

Yes, we have the Olympic Training Center at NMU. Also, the speed skaters were all here in Marquette in September to qualify for the Olympics. That's where that J.R. C? guy cut his leg so badly. Would have loved to have been able to see Apolo Ohno when he was right here, but didn't get the chance.
