Old Dogs......New Tricks
Yes....even the stubbornest person can learn new tricks!! Last Saturday night, Pam,Rob, Siena, Arlene and I went to El Monte - a new restaurant here in Fort Collins. It was Arlene's birthday. One feature of this place was the guacamole bar. It seems they make guacamole to order and everyone....except Rob and I ...loves guacamole. Even Siena has been eating mashed avocado for several weeks now. I've been informed that avocado is the main ingredient of guacamole. I have always turned my nose up at that part of the food group saying I didn't like it...without ever tasting it. Growing up, I was never exposed to an avocado or any by-product of one. To this day, I have no idea what an avocado looks like or how to prepare it. I told Pam I would try ONE chip with a teeny bite of guacamole...just to please her. WOW - my taste buds did a little dance of joy. That was actually very good. Of course, I had to try some more to see if it had been a fluke. Rob also tried it, but shook his head and said no thanks. Pam said he didn't care for it. I actually ended up helping Pam and Arlene polish off the dish of guacamole. Just proves the theory..."Don't knock it if you ain't tried it!!"

It's still gross :)
I wouldn't eat it on a daily basis, either. I would probably never order it in a restaurant as I wasn't that crazy about it, but I might try it again as an appetizer. Of course, I WOULD eat liver and onions!! yummy!
I have to agree with Rob - gross. And liver is definitely gross too -double yuk! Onions are okay.
Guacamole is OK, but our friend's think we eat the strangest things as well. I just LOVE Beef Kidney fried up in the pan with onions, green peppers, mushrooms and garlic! Most deliciosso!!! We are also big fans of fried green tomamtoes and fiddleheads. Peanut butter and banana sandwiches are a good night time snack and any sandwich with chips inside is OK by me, also. Call me weird, I know. :)
Fresh guacamole is the best! Guac that has been sitting around for a while or that is too pureed is gross. Fresh, sliced avocado on a salad or eggs benedict is yummy too. Peanut butter & banana sandwiches are yummy as but all this talk about fried liver is just disgusting.
LOL High in Iron!
Okay - if I see anything else about liver and kidney and guacamole, I'm just gonna vomit!
You guys just don't know what GOOD food is...none of those fancy, spancy dishes you see on restaurant menus. I prefer a good ole fashioned Yankee meal any day. Grampa loved fried tripe and pickled pigs feet... both yummy meals, but you won't find them on any restaurant menu. You guys wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes growing up in my day.Old-fashioned oatmeal or baked beans was the breakfast of every day Besides tripe or liver, we had dried fish, lamb's tongue, baked chicken, etc. Everything my mother put on our table was made from scratch...even puddings or breads. I lived in an era when mothers stayed home and cooked, sewed, made cookies, soap, butter, candles, etc. for their family because that is what mothers were supposed to do besides raise the children. To me, those WERE the good ole days!!!
When was the last time you ate fried tripe (don't even have a clue as to what tripe is!) and pickled pigs feet?? If you asked ten people if they liked "tripe", liver, and kidney, I would bet you that at least 8 of them would say no way! I make almost everything from scratch (although I do use the "box" brownie mixes). I will bet that you have more "boxes" of food in your cupboard right now than all of us put together. Just because someone doesn't like certain foods, does not mean they aren't a good cook and can't appreciate "good" food any more than the next guy. Everyone's tastes are different. And lots of those foods that your mother fed you back in the "good ole days" were very high in cholesterol, fat, and calories.
I would eat fried tripe if I could find it in the stores. Tripe is the lining of a cow's stomach. When dipped in an egg batter and fried, it is delicious. I never said anyone was not a good cook - I said you don't appreciate good food, or foods that are good for you. To each his own. I actually have many "boxes" in my cupboards, but - like Nana -prefer eating out rather than throwing away outdated left-overs. Eating habits change as you get older and only have one to cook for.
