Well - the company has returned home, the decorations are packed away for another year, the food has been devoured, and the gifts have been returned or put away. All that remains of Christmas 2009, is the Christmas cards adorning the wall for another week or two. They are so beautiful and snail mail is so hard to come by anymore that I just want to cling to these as long as possible. It's a shame that the holiday goes by so fast as it seems to take weeks of preparation getting ready with all the cooking, shopping, wrapping, decorating, etc.
2009 was an eventful year filled with joy and sadness. This was the year we lost such celebrities as Michael Jackson, Patrick Swazye, and so many others. It was the year the first black man was elected to be president of our country. It was a year of joy at the birth of my youngest grand daughter - Siena, and my youngest great granddaughter - Kendra. It was a year of travel as I went home to Maine during Labor Day week for my 57th class reunion and a visit with many friends in the Brunswick area. This visit also included a family reunion at my daughter's home in Freeport. It was a year of returning to the college campus, after a year's sabbathical. Other events of 2009 not so closely connected to me included my oldest grand daughter's move from Michigan to Wyoming with her finance and her engagement; my son putting his 22 year old chow to sleep,( but he has since gotten a new chow named Maya to replace Georgia); and a wonderful year of watching Siena grow from an infant to a toddler.
This year has been a tough one for our country. Housing foreclosures, the faultering stock market, a slumping economy over all has been cause for concern for many. Several members of my family have been out of work this past year as have many around the country. Our Congressional members have been wrangling with several serious issues this year including the war in Afghanistan, health care for all, and environmental issues. The national debt is sky-high and still rising daily. What a legacy for our children and grand children.
Each new year adds another year to my life and another year closer to Eternity. I have lived a very fulfilling life and although I'm not anxious for it to end soon, am prepared for when the time comes. I have successfully raised 4 children who are all now in the throes of raising their children. That is a good feeling for a mother.....especially since most of my child-rearing was done with out a father in the home. I know Jerry is proud of how his children turned out as he should be. Carter also has great pride in Pam and her accomplishments as an adult, a wife, and a mother. My house is in order - as they say - and whatever this new year holds for any of us, I'm sure it will be another page in our "history" book of life.
Happy New Year to all of you and may 2010 be everything you want it to be.

That last paragraph brought tears to my eyes. I feel so lucky to be considered a part of your family (your 5th child at times) and I, too, am proud of Pam and her accomplishments. How lucky you are to have all of your kids, grandkids, and great grandkids as a part of your life. You have done an amazing job, often with very little help, and as a friend and "other daughter" I am very proud of you as well. Happy 2010! Love you!
Mom; I am VERY PROUD of the things you have accomplished! Your second year anniversary of NOT SMOKING. That's AMAZING! You go to school, babysit the granddaughter, and live alone at 75! Kudo's to you! Good Job! ;)
