24 Hours Later...

If you compare this picture to the one I took yesterday morning at this time, you'll get a rough idea of what we, in Colorado and Wyoming, are dealing with. The legs of those patio chairs are about 12" high....and this isn't even a straight hit from snow,as I have another patio floor up above mine. This is the 2nd big snowstorm here...and it is still October. The 1st day of winter - according to the calendar - is December 21st.....guess Mother Nature didn't get the memo!!

Richard told me this morning that Cheyenne hasn't had this much snow since the 1880s. The road from Wellington, CO to Laramie, Wyoming has been closed for 24 hours due to the snow, visibility, and accidents before they closed it. There are currently about 35 tractor trailers lined up along the roadway waiting for the storm to abate so they can get through to Montana or wherever they are going with their loads. Although the snow is letting up today in some places, the eastern part of Colorado is facing blizzard conditions today due to temperatures hanging in the teens and the winds are picking up. My tree branches are so loaded with wet heavy snow that in some places they are touching the ground. This could result in power outages and with these temperatures....I hope not.

I was rudely awakened at 5:30 this morning by FRCC calling me to say the college was closed again today!!! Duh...you think?? The buses stopped running at 4pm yesterday and I doubt if they have resumed service as CSU is also closed. Many businesses have been closed since noon yesterday and all the schools are closed. Not much business for a bus company in these conditions. DIA has cancelled most flights due to heavy snow on the runways. Colorado is not geared to deal with this kind of winter weather....our snowfalls usually melt away within 24 hours. I'm sure the kids around here will be trick-or-treating in winter coats and boots, as when this snow does melt - we'll be dealing with a water problem for a day or two.

For you in Maine and Michigan.....hang in there.....your turn is coming. Meanwhile I'd be glad to send you some snow if you are tired of waiting! Here in Colorado, people are either waxing the shovel....or their skiis!!

Time to go put up the Chjristmas tree because "it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas"....and it is STILL snowing.

earlier today i was thinking the same thing...that it feels like I should be putting up Christmas decorations. But that is just way, way too early - despite the weather outside.

I kinda like the snow. reminds me of "good ole Maine winters" back when I was a kid. We'll see how into the snow I am come March.

Since you guys are getting the snow early, perhaps you will have a shorter winter in the long run or an early spring. Let's get the other major holidays over with first before any more of this talk about Christmas though, i.e. Halloween, Deer Hunting season (a U.P. thing), and Thanksgiving.

Sorry that you guys have gotten hit SO hard! That's a lot of snow for October! We had a dusting last Sunday! That's it for us, but like I have said, "Our time is coming!" Have a fun~filled time with the snow, because we all know it will melt soon and you will be back in the 50's and 60's and probably the 70's! We will not, huh Brenda? Have fun, enjoy and stay safe!

I need to figure out how to truck the snow up I-70. The ski resort only got 9" in the last 3 days :(

They can have whats on my patio!! Official snowfall for Ft.Collins was 21.5 inches. Beats Maine snowstorms...and our schools have been closed for 3 straight days.

Schools closed for 3 days with 21 inches of snow? Wow - a bit overly cautious there. People who live in Colorado are plenty used to snow. I would think they could get around and about better than that. Geez....with some of the storms we get here in the U.P., 21 inches is a dusting!

Yes-Brenda.....21" of snow is a walk in the park for UP and they are geared to handle that much snow because it happens every year. Except for the mountains, Colorado is not a big snow state. Many of our streets are never touched by a plow which makes side streets, parking lots, etc. hard to maneuver in until the sun melts some of the snow. The problem with this storm was the length of it, the very cold temperatures, and the wind. We have a different type of snowstorm here than in the UP due to the mountains. Today temps are in the 40s so I expect that will help in melting down the snowbanks and the streets that were unplowed.

I understand all that, and not disagreeing. However, schools closed for three days is a bit on the ridiculous side. Especially considering how fast your temps change and how quickly that snow melts. You would be the first to tell me that "back in the good ole days, we walked to school in a blizzard for 10 miles!" School was in session no matter what the weather was. Now, sometimes schools are called off before it even starts snowing. Please!!
